From Ep14 The Climapreneur Show- In Conversation with Anuradha Parekh, Co-founder The Better India
I think we need to see the perspective of our parents. The fact that such careers and such awareness did not exist, at their end or at that point of time is something that we need to be cognizant of, and empathetic towards.
I think it is really upon us, it’s something that we need to undertake to help them understand that these are important subjects and these are really important actions that we need to take right now.
The thing is that I think our parents were naturally very sustainable. That’s something I believe. I have seen the way they were earlier where single use plastic was hardly there. These are the kinds of issues that they never really faced, because the world was quite different if you look at it 30 or 40 years ago.
So the kind of awareness that we feel and the kind of issues that we’re seeing around us, were not really large concerns for that generation. And hence, they do not really see the need for that, for people dedicating their lives towards this. And these career options definitely did not exist, right, or they were really, really limited. And the motive was to make money and to get a comfortable life for everyone.
So I think we just need to be a lot more understanding of where they are coming from, and help them understand why what we are doing is important.
I think your success is going to speak volumes, it’s going to convince people like nothing else ever did.
So just keep at it. And eventually, everybody who never saw the point initially, will come around and embrace what you’re doing.
So when we started out, our parents could not understand what we were doing. And then we were chucking really lucrative careers straight out of B school, and getting into the impact sector, which was just not something that anybody in their generation did. Right, you waited until you retired. And then you looked at the social sector and environmental concerns, which were just not a matter of discussion at all in their times.
